Migraines and headaches have different causes. The pains associated with the common headache often results from a narrowing of the blood vessels to the brain. (Vaso constriction) However, the pain from a migraine is the opposite. During a migraine the blood vessels surrounding the brain swell. (Vaso dilation) The major distinction between the two is that a headache is viewed as a symptom whereas a migraine is classified as a disease. Migraines can be associated with many symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines can last from hours to days. Relief may be achieved with bodywork and non medical treatment such as lifestyle changes may include increasing your hydration levels, changing your diet, exercising and/or swimming. Incorporating relaxation modalities such as deep breathing techniques, meditation, yoga, Tai Chi, acupuncture and regular massage therapy may also be beneficial.
